Robotic & Computer Navigated Joint Replacement

OrthAlign Smart Technology

OrthoAlign is a Smart hand-held technology, powered by MEMS (micro-electromechanical sensor) that can be used for total joint arthroplasty. This technology provides intra-operative live digital feedback of critical TKA and THA parameters. OrthoAlign is 100% surgeon-controlled and over 150,000 surgeries have been performed with this technology.

OrthAlign’s inertial navigation technology consists of gyroscopes and accelerometers.  Accelerometers measure linear acceleration or tilt when the unit moves from a stationary position.  Gyroscopes measure angular rates or speed of rotation.  This technology is commonly used for aircraft, aerospace navigation, automobiles, mobile devices, and virtual reality.

Clinical Value

  • Knee - Accurate alignment of tibial and distal femoral resection
  • Hip - Accurate cup placement and leg length assessment for both Lateral/Supine THA

Simplicity

  • Easily integrates into standard workflow
  • Hand-held device in the sterile field
  • No pre-op preparation
  • Eliminates the need for lead

Accuracy

  • Equivalent to large console navigation
  • “Every post op x-ray looks the same”
  • Prevent malalignment in TKA
  • Reduce outliers in THA

Robotics - Styker MAKO

Step 1 - Scan
Before surgery, a CT scan of your knee is taken and used to develop a 3D virtual model of your unique joint.

Step 2 - Plan
The second step is patient-specific surgical planning. Your doctor uses the 3D CT-based model to evaluate your bone structure, disease severity, joint alignment and even the surrounding bone and tissue so that they can determine the desired size, placement add alignment of your implant.

Step 3 - Mako Can
In the operating room, Dr. Shakir guides Mako’s robotic arm to remove arthritic bone and cartilage from the knee.  Mako’s Accustop technology creates a virtual boundary that provides a tactile resistance to help the surgeon stay within the boundaries defined in your surgical plan. Through the procedure, Mako provides real-time data to the surgeon, allowing them to assess the movement and tension of your joint and adjust your surgical plan if desired.
